From the 22nd to the 25th of March, the 35th International Mercat del Ram Balloon Trophy of Vic will take place with around thirty participants. In total there are 28 pilots who come from mostly European countries such as Austria, Sweden, United Kingdom, France or Italy. Although this year also come from the USA or Argentina.
The Festival of Balloons Mercat del Ram de Vic is the oldest sporting event in the world of ballooning in Catalonia and is one of the most prestigious events in Europe. It is celebrated every year during the weekend before Easter and every year since 1984 in Vic.
The event lasts four days, from Thursday to Sunday, and attracts a crowd of spectators. The event includes a balloon contest, exhibition hot air balloon flights and Night Glow at the spectacular Plaça Major in the center of Vic. One of the most emblematic and complicated events at the same time is the one on Saturday, which will be won by the pilot who hovers closest to the bell tower of the town hall.
One of the attractions of this event for balloon enthusiasts is the opportunity to take off on Friday and Saturday from the Plaza Mayor in Vic, a place with a lot of history and a special charm, so those days the square is filled with color with the hot air balloons and when they rise they allow us to take instincts full of magic. These flights can be enjoyed by any passenger who wishes to hire a PRIVATE FLIGHT for up to two people, as space is not allowed to take off large balloons from the square. During the flight the panoramic from the balloon is spectacular, we contemplate the old town, the Roman Temple, the Cathedral of San Pere and the Episcopal Museum, and a sea of ??hot air balloons sailing in the sky of Vic.
After each hot air balloon flight, the pilots, crews and passengers join to share a lunch at a restaurant in Vic. A ritual in the ballooing world, because after the adventure it is necessary to regain strength. The rest of the day we will take the opportunity to visit the stalls of the Mercat del Ram fair and attend the activities programmed by Vic Fires and Vic City Council.
